Spartans Split Saturday Doubleheader At Purdue

The Michigan State baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Purdue's Lambert Field. The Spartans defeated the Boilermakers, 11-3, before dropping a 6-2 decision in the nightcap. Junior Eric Roof had four RBI and senior Chris Cullen got the win for MSU in game one. MSU (24-24, 12-14 Big Ten) has won two of the first three games of the series. The Spartans have won 11 of their past 14 games.

Monterey's Gem Leads MSU To 6-1 Win Over Purdue

Senior right-hander Mike Monterey pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on eight hits and MSU scored four runs in the top of the ninth as the Michigan State baseball (23-23, 11-13 Big Ten) team defeated Purdue, 6-1, at a rainy Lambert Field. Sophomore Chris Roberts went 3-for-4 with three RBI and senior Steve Gerstenberger had an RBI single to lead the Spartans. The MSU win marked the first Big Ten Friday loss for Purdue this season.

Michigan State junior Eric Roof (Paducah, Ky./St. Mary HS) has been named second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Disctrict IV in the University Division by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The announcement was made Friday, May 9.

Spartans Travel To Purdue For Four-Game Series

After winning eight of its last nine games, the Michigan State baseball team (22-23, 10-13 Big Ten) travels to Purdue for a four-game series beginning Friday, May 9 at 4 p.m. at PU's Lambert Field. The two teams will then play a 1 p.m. on Saturday and a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday. MSU went 4-1 last week, posting a win over Oakland before taking three of four at Penn State. The Spartans have started this week in the same fashion, defeating Western Michigan, 8-6, Wednesday evening.

Spartan Baseball Defeats Western Michigan, 8-6

Sophomore Chris Roberts had a pair of RBI singles and junior Eric Roof hit a three-run homer to lead the Michigan State baseball team to an 8-6 win over Western Michigan Wednesday evening at Oldsmobile Park. Eric Roof finished the day with four RBI and junior A.J. Dunn got credit for the win. The Spartans have won nine of their last 11 games.

The Michigan State baseball team hosts Western Michigan Wednesday, May 7 at 6:05 p.m. at Oldsmobile Park. The Spartans, who are 8-2 over their last 10 games, enter the contest with a 21-23 record. WMU is 23-17-1 heading into Tuesday night's game at Oakland. Wednesday's game is the first of two contests between the two schools this season. MSU defeated the Broncos, 10-1, on April 9 in Kalamazoo.

The Michigan State baseball team used a pair of impressive starting pitching performances to sweep Penn State, 4-1 and 10-2, Sunday afternoon at Medlar Field. MSU (21-23, 10-13 Big Ten), which won three of four in the series, has now won seven of its last eight games and is just a 1/2 game back of sixth place Penn State (20-27, 11-13) in the conference standings. In game one, which went seven innings, Mark Sorensen (3-5) allowed just four hits and one run in six innings while striking out three. Freshman A.J. Achter pitched 7.1 innings of one-hit ball in the second game to collect his first career victory. At the plate, Chris Roberts had three hits on the day, including four RBI and a two-run homer in game two.

Penn State Holds On, Edges Spartan Baseball, 2-1

After a two hour and 45 minute rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning, Penn State held on to defeat the Michigan State baseball team in seven innings, 2-1, Saturday night at Medlar Field, halting the Spartans' five-game winning streak. Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to further rain in the State College area and will be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 12:05 p.m. MSU falls to 19-23 (8-13 Big Ten), while Penn State improves to 20-25 (11-11).
