Ryan Brehm and Laura Kueny Named Golf World Mid-Season All-Americans

Senior Ryan Brehm was named a Mid-Season All-American by Golf World this winter.

Feb. 7, 2008

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf senior Ryan Brehm and women's golf sophomore Laura Kueny were selected as Mid-Season All-Americans by Golf World, after the pair compiled impressive Fall resumes. Michigan State is one of only two schools - Oklahoma State being the other - to have a student-athlete named to each 12-person team.

Brehm, currently ranked No. 9 in the country by Golfweek.com, has led the No. 15 Spartans to three top-two team finishes in five Fall tournaments, including the MSU win at the Fighting Irish Invitational. As an individual, Brehm has been equally impressive, winning or sharing the title in three of those five tournaments. The three-time All-Big Ten selection began the Fall by tying for first at the Inverness Intercollegiate with a three-under par 210 (70-67-73). After a tie for 29th place showing at the Gopher Invitational, Brehm came back to tie for fourth at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, firing a one-under par 215 (74-71-70). Brehm, who is the Spartans' career scoring average leader at 73.26, finished the Fall strong with individual titles at the Fighting Irish Invitational and the Big Ten/Pac 10 Challenge. He topped the field in South Bend by five strokes with a five-under par 205 (72-64-69), tying his own school record with the second round 64. Closing out the Fall, Brehm shot a six-under par 210 (68-75-67) to come-from-behind on the final to top UCLA's Kevin Chappell, the country's No. 3 golfer according to Golfweek.

Kueny also finished the Fall ranked nationally by Golfweek.com, coming in at No. 15. She was the top Michigan State finisher in all four events this Fall, leading the No. 21 ranked Spartans to three top-three team finishes, including a win at the Mary Fossum Invitational, in its four stroke tournaments. She began the fall by winning the individual title at the Mary Fossum Invitational with a tournament record two-under par 214 (71-70-73), earning her Golfweek's Player of the Week honors in the process. Kueny followed that up with a one-under par 215 (75-69-71) performance at the Lady Northern finish second. After a tie for 21st at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship, Kueny returned to the top of the leaderboard at the Landfall Tradition, tying for second with a two-over par 218 (75-69-74).

Both Brehm and Kueny have also been topic of conversation on the Golfweek.com web site. Brehm was mentioned as a player to watch in the spring by Golfweek senior writer Ron Balicki's during the Golfweek.com's Spring College Preview. Meanwhile Kueny, along with MSU head men's coach Sam Puryear, were featured in Lance Ringler's College Golf ABCs as the "L" and "S", respectively.

The MSU women's team begins 2008 spring competition on Monday, Feb. 11 with the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. Meanwhile, the men's squad tee-off the spring on Sunday, Feb. 24 with the Spartan Challenge in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
