Gina Mondo

March 9, 2008

After 18 games, second baseman Gina Mondo leads the Spartans hitting .421, with 24 hits, a team-high six doubles, one triple and a grand slam to combine for 10 RBIs. From the field, Mondo has chalked up 33 put outs with 34 assists, and just three errors for a.957 fielding percentage. Read about how the Orange, Conn. native fell in love with Michigan State and how she continues to develop her skill and passion for MSU softball.

You're from Connecticut and played club ball in the east during high school. What brought you to Michigan State?
I fell in love with the school, and I thought the team and coaches were great. I initially really wanted to go out west and play in warmer weather, but Michigan State was just a perfect fit. Named March 3's Big Ten Player of the Week, what have you done to improve your game this year, on and off the field?
I have really worked on being a complete player this year. I've spent a lot of time focusing on my mental game and then also on my hitting. And it's all come together.

What do you think your major role is on the team?
I do a little bit of everything - I like to think - for the team. But I'm definitely all about the comic relief.

What were your first impressions of Coach Joseph and the Michigan State program when you were initially recruited?
I first met Coach J. when she came to watch me at a travel ball tournament. I thought she was passionate and enthusiastic about her program and just softball in general. Then, on my official visit, I just felt really comfortable at MSU - on campus and around East Lansing. I also got along well with the team, and it all felt right.

What were your personal goals at the beginning of the season? How have they progressed or changed after the first month of games?
I had two main goals in mind before the season started. I really wanted to play to my full potential and ability, both mentally and physically. And I wanted to build a consistent game. And so far so good.

Mondo's grand slam in the top of the eighth helped propel the Spartans past No. 13 Baylor on March 7.

Softball takes you around the country to play in tournaments from coast to coast. What has been your favorite tournament to play in?
Last year and this year we went to the Palm Springs Classic in California, and that has been my favorite. We have the opportunity to play three full days of games against some of the best teams in the country.

And what was your favorite tournament as far as team-bonding?
By far, it has to be Elk Rapids. We do a lot of fun team bonding activities, and it really helps integrate the freshmen into the program.
